Our trip to Re-Member
Nine students and three adult chaperones took a nine day trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to work with an organization called “Re-Member.” This service learning trip incorporated Re-Member’s mission to build bridges to the Lakota people while assisting them in doing home repairs. Students skirted mobile homes, built and installed wheel chair ramps, decks, stairways, outhouses and bunk beds. Lakota speakers shared Lakota history, games and aspects of life on the reservation at night. Our class visited a Pine Ridge High School class that was teaching Lakota language and culture and the students learned, though their lives were very different, they had much in common. It was an incredible experience and we hope this becomes a staple of students’ MG21 Upper Campus experience.
